"Your Life On Earth" Personal Philosophy Project
The “Your Life on Earth” philosophy project was based on the intention to allow us, as students, to begin the arduous process of discovering what we feel to be our personal philosophies, those things that will guide us in our actions as we move on into the future. Mine was different from my peers in that it was primarily a search externally rather than internally in my case due to the nature of my medium. My inspiration behind the direction I took was my grandfather, who used to tell me stories about his life and the world, and remembrance of the pain I felt when he passed away, a pain made worse because I still hadn’t heard them all. The perspective I developed was simple in nature: everyone, especially our elder have stories and lessons to be taught, and listening to them, gaining the knowledge that they have accumulated over a lifetime, is important for our future.
By talking to the people I did, I learned numerous things. Humans as a species enjoy helping each other, we find it fulfilling, and I am no exception. Listening to the stories I heard, it was clear to me that even while we may be inconsequential in the fabric of our universe, it is our interactions that make us important. Everything we have ever known is on this small blue dot that we call earth, but if our entire world is the fabric of our existence as humans, is it not beautiful that our place in this universe is so small. It means that one act of kindness towards another person can start a ripple effect, changing the winds of the world, on which we float like dust. One kind teacher can create someone who helps to cure the ailments of many, one dedicated doctor can save a whole family's existence, and one engineer can build the foundations upon which a better society is built. If there is one thing I learned throughout this project, it is that you never know when you are doing it, but one day you might be able to look back and realize that your small contribution helped far beyond the range that you thought it might.
From here I plan to pursue my intellectual quandaries throughout the rest of my life. I want to travel, see new places and the cultures that surround them. I want to talk to new people, no matter the age and hear the stories that make them who they are. By talking to people about their experiences, dreams, and insights I hope to grow. Everyone has a story worth telling, and I’d like to hear them all.
