Project Description:
Throughout the course of this project we studied satire and the satirical devices that help to aid in delivering or accentuating messages. We did this by describing and defining the satirical devices we saw in multiple different mediums, including art and literature. After studying these aspects of satire, we then were tasked with creating a satirical work of our own as well as tying satire into a Rube Goldberg that we did in conjunction with Physics. Shown below are both the video of the Rube Goldberg Machine and the satirical piece that I created, by the name of "The White House COVID-19 Conference Room."

Project Reflection:
For my Humanities Satirical piece I created a drawing that is intended to target Trump and his party/ followers and their fumbling of the COVID-19 pandemic. In order to convey this message I used multiple satirical devices including, but not limited to, caricature and sarcasm. In the case of the caricature, I wanted it to have the impact of making you vaguely uncomfortable and disgusted while looking at the targets. The sarcasm was more abundantly seen in the conversation the characters are having, in which Kayleigh McEnany, famous for avoiding answering questions at COVID-19 and other nationally televised press briefings, is saying that she missed the game because she “was too busy avoiding the press.’ Giuliani comments on the money paid to him by Trump representing the complete lack of motivation beyond monetary gain behind both Trumps and Giuliani’s actions.
The most important thing I learned throughout the course of this project was that the different methods of satire encompass multiple styles beyond writing and speech. I found this to be interesting because up until this point I had read multiple satirical papers, and I was able to recognize the satirical devices when used in speech (sarcasm, understatement, etc.) but I was unaware that cartoonist and art fell under this classification as well, and this knowledge allows me to look at images with a newly acquired depth and help me to understand what the messages and targets are as well. This learning is clearly represented in my final project through the fact that my satire is, in fact, art.
I believe the role satire plays in society can be seen through its unique ability to open the eyes of people to the ridiculous, angering, unrighteous, and damaging. This truth can be seen from satirical works such as that of A Modest Proposal, which targeted the social tiers of the Irish at the time, to the millions of art pieces that criticize everything from governments to eating habits.
I believe that I should score around a 9 for my performance in this class so far. I gave myself this score because I truly do believe that 1) I am usually prepared for class with my materials technology, and assignments( I have not missed a single assignment yet this semester.) 2) When I arrive to class, I immediately orient myself to the day’s learning by dropping in to the starter or opening activity (I consistently join the class and do the starter, even before it has been assigned to the class verbally.) 3) I generally use my class time effectively during in-person and online days to complete my assignments. (I do the work, and use my class time to complete that which I need too.) 4) I mostly engage in class activities, and can usually find a way to be interested in what we are doing. (I consistently answer questions and play a key role in completing group work.)
