Precalculus: A Year In Review
My growth as a mathematician through the lens of the Habits of Heart and Mind can most easily be seen in my perseverance and refinement. My perseverance came through in my persistence in order to turn in all of the assignments, and my insistence on going back through and fixing anything that was less than it should be. This allowed me to grasp in greater detail the concepts throughout the course of the year. My growth in regards to refinement was best exemplified during the POWs. I worked hard to turn in the POWs after asking for peer critique and then asking Julian to future critique it for me so that the work I turned in was something I could be proud to show others. This was a process I used in all of the POWs we had to do, and it made my work better, which allowed me to be proud of my work.
My growth through the habits of a mathematician can be found in generating ideas and recognizing and resolving errors. I was consistently able to generate multiple ways to approach a problem, and often included them in my POWs and I was able to identify the mathematical tools necessary to solve or further progress our problems. I also would follow paths often that weren’t the correct answer and would have to disprove myself and look back at the steps of my solution to recognize what I can change to get the right answer. This in particular is something I struggled with in the past, so my growth was notable.
