Mask Project
What are the differences between your personal and social identities? How have you been shaped by the Agents of Socialization? How much personal choice do you have in shaping your own identity as well as others’ identity? How can we use the tools we have to disrupt dehumanizing aspects of socialization? These were the questions we were asked at the beginning of this project, in which we would be doing a deep dive into the previously unfamiliar idea of socialization and how it has affected us. Over the course of this assignment, we were both heartened and disturbed by the process that society uses to turn infants into capable parts of society. We spent about 8 weeks on content, looking into the ideologies that include: Agents of Socialization (family, friends, religion, media, school, sports), target and agent groups which is classification based upon gender, sexual orientation, religious beliefs, race, ability, socioeconomic class, and ethnicity. We also studied identity through the lens of the persistence of identity through the academic articles including Franz Kafka’s “The Metamorphosis” and the “Ship of Theseus.” Using the knowledge that we gained throughout this process we then applied this content to our personal lives in the creation of our masks and essays.
In this project, I felt that I showed mediocre to high responsibility. I consistently had all of my work in on time and my work was well done. This said I was sometimes off task in class, usually, after I had already finished my work. I feel that I did rather well in advocacy throughout the course of this project. I was consistently talking to my teacher in the pursuit to better my writing, especially in the essay. I exhibited a large amount of perseverance in this project. I did not give up easily, I strove consistently to understand the project and get my work done well. I produced refined work throughout the course of this project. Because of this, I take a lot of pride in both my mask and my essay.
This project impacted me as a student by giving me a new perspective on how I have been affected and how I will continue to be socialized throughout my life. This project helped me to see the base ideas behind oppression. It helped me to see why oppression is so easy to believe in as well as why we need to disregard this aspect of socialization in order to move forward. This project helped me to again realize how important personal refinement is, and beyond that, how important societal refinement is. To create a better system we must strive to look beyond our societal norms and refine our system to not tolerate oppression. We must put effort into revising our system.
